The sunset lit the sea of bright yellow petals on fire. We gazed at the horizon, shoulder-to-shoulder with the tall sunflowers. For the first time in my life, I could see myself, my heart. I could see the person I had become, after all that time. Every breath I took gave me new life, every sunflower in my view was indescribably exquisite. Without turning, I spoke.
“I guess you’ve come full circle now. I still have places I want to go, so this is our farewell.”
“But, Hamlet, where do you have to go without me?”
I smiled as I waved goodbye to him. Now was my time to leave.
“Just here and there.”
Despite everything, I found myself laughing as I ran, with the sunflowers as wind beneath my wings. I didn’t know where I would go, but I knew I was already going there.
